From Datacenter to Cloud – How the Industry Moved Beyond the Server Room.

AI is no longer a promise of the future. It is reality – and it is reshaping IT operations faster than most teams ever expected. But long before artificial intelligence changed the game, another revolution forced the industry to rethink everything: the move from datacenter to cloud. According to IDC, nearly 60 percent of European enterprises now run most of their workloads in hybrid or fully cloud-based environments. The traditional server room, once the beating heart of every IT integrator, has become more of a symbolic space than an operational one. “We used to sell rack servers,” recalls one veteran sales director. “Now we sell scalability.” What once meant hardware now means subscription.

For system integrators, this shift was nothing short of an identity crisis. Those who had spent decades installing servers, wiring switches, and securing backup tapes suddenly had to think in terms of tenants, subscriptions, and service-level agreements. Instead of maintaining physical boxes, they were managing invisible layers of virtual infrastructure. The DNA of the business changed – – from building systems to orchestrating them. Microsoft 365, AWS, and Azure became the new gravity centers of the IT universe. Within a few years, they evolved from optional tools to foundational infrastructure. Many integrators had to accept that they were no longer the sole architects of a customer’s environment but part of a vast ecosystem controlled by global hyperscalers. “Back then, if you pulled a cable, everything went dark,” says a cloud engineer at a mid-sized European integrator. “Today, you’d have to shut down half the planet to make the same impact.”

This loss of control raised new questions. Who is accountable when data disappears? Where does the integrator’s responsibility end and the provider’s begin? The industry had to find new boundaries, and it still does. Yet, the shift also unlocked new opportunities: managed cloud, security-as-a-service, continuous optimization. System integrators that once lived from projects began building long-term service relationships. The financial implications were enormous. Gartner estimates that over 70 percent of global IT service revenue now comes from recurring models. Those who once fought for hardware margins now profit from usage-based billing, compliance monitoring, and automation. Still, not everyone was ready to surrender control. “We can’t blindly trust the black box,” warns an IT security architect. “If everything we rely on runs in someone else’s cloud, we need to know what’s underneath – even if we can’t see it.” Cloud computing didn’t just free businesses from physical constraints – it tied them to new dependencies. The competition of the future isn’t between products but between platforms. Integrators that lock themselves into one vendor’s orbit risk losing their flexibility. But multicloud expertise demands skills that not every company can afford. The survivors are not the biggest but the most adaptable.

One thing is clear: there’s no way back. No CIO today plans a new server room with a hundred physical machines. No mid-sized enterprise wants to rebuild a RAID array at three in the morning. Instead, the real questions are different: How do we secure data across regions? How do we control costs when usage fluctuates every hour? How do we maintain visibility when the infrastructure keeps moving?

In many of our conversations with operations managers, one theme stands out — the cloud has fully dematerialized IT thinking. Success is no longer about owning hardware but about ensuring availability. What once required screwdrivers and patch cables now requires portals, scripts, and governance models. Still, there are skeptics. Some warn that companies have become too detached from their own infrastructure, losing not just control but understanding. Others argue that this is exactly the point: to let go of what slows innovation and focus instead on strategy, security, and growth.

What remains is a new self-concept for the system integrator. The old-style IT provider has evolved into a cloud architect – a translator between technology worlds and a long-term partner in continuous change. And while AI is already driving the next wave, the debate over how much trust and responsibility we can place in these invisible systems is far from over.
