From Load Balancing to Cloud Security: F5 in Transition

Today’s edition in our series on major IT vendor certification programs takes a closer look at a company that has been somewhat quieter in recent years, yet continues to play a critical role in data centers around the world: F5.

The founders of Darkgate, who also operate one of the most respected international recruitment agencies for IT professionals, have hands-on experience with this vendor. For several years, we have supported a long-established IT integrator based in Hesse near Frankfurt, a traditional large-scale organization with several hundred employees and a broad vendor portfolio. F5 is part of that vendor stack as a provider of security and load balancing technologies. However, based on our experience, F5 appears less frequently in the portfolios of the integrators we work with, especially when compared to major players such as Cisco, Fortinet or Palo Alto Networks.

There are several reasons for this. F5 has traditionally been deeply rooted in enterprise environments that rely on dedicated Application Delivery Controllers. While many integrators have shifted their focus in recent years toward next generation firewalls, endpoint protection and cloud security platforms, F5 has remained firmly positioned in the application layer. Moreover, implementing and maintaining F5 solutions requires highly specialized expertise, and many smaller integrators prefer broader, easier to deploy security technologies.Founded in 1996 in Seattle, F5 Networks started out as a load balancing company. Early on, F5 recognized that the future of digital traffic lay in the intelligent delivery and protection of applications. With its BIG IP product family, F5 created one of the most powerful platforms for application delivery, reverse proxy, SSL offloading and web application security. Today, the company defines itself as a provider of application security and multi cloud delivery, ensuring that applications remain secure and performant regardless of infrastructure or cloud provider.

F5 also has a long standing certification history. The first credentials were introduced in the early 2000s. For many years, the most recognized certifications were the F5 Certified Administrator (F5 CA) and F5 Certified Technical Specialist (F5 CTS). The program follows a structured path: it begins with the F5 Certified BIG IP Administrator (F5 CA), which verifies foundational knowledge in configuration, maintenance and system operations. From there, candidates can specialize in areas such as LTM (Local Traffic Manager) or ASM (Application Security Manager). At the top level stands the F5 Certified Solution Expert (F5 CSE), a credential that demands deep expertise in complex architectures, automation, scripting and hybrid multi cloud integrations.All exams are delivered through Pearson VUE and typically combine multiple choice questions with lab based simulations. The failure rate for higher level exams is traditionally high, as F5 tests require not just theoretical understanding but hands on, technical mastery. As a result, certified F5 professionals are in high demand, especially among large integrators, hosting providers and financial institutions managing complex application infrastructures.

In recent years, F5 has modernized its certification program significantly, particularly following its acquisitions of NGINX and Shape Security. These integrations introduced new domains such as application security automation, API protection and cloud native delivery into the curriculum. The traditional on premises focus has been expanded to include containerized architectures, Kubernetes integration and security as code concepts.With this evolution, F5 has repositioned itself, less as a pure load balancer vendor and more as a platform provider for modern application security. Still, entry into this ecosystem remains demanding. In conversations with IT leaders and consultants, we consistently hear that F5 certifications rank among the most technically challenging in the networking and security field. An F5 CTS or CSE title represents not only technical knowledge but also real world experience managing large scale enterprise infrastructures.Even though F5 appears less frequently in partner stacks, its technology remains indispensable in enterprise environments, especially where performance, availability and application level security are critical. F5 represents a category of vendors that may operate in the background but remain vital to the stability and security of today’s connected world.
