AI is no longer a promise. It is reality. And it is reshaping industrial IT faster than most teams expected. Yet the real challenge isn’t just artificial intelligence. It’s the convergence of two worlds that were never meant to meet: enterprise IT and operational technology.
According to IDC, more than 60 percent of European industrial enterprises see their biggest security challenge in the integration of IT and OT networks. Ten years ago, most plants ran in isolation. Today they are tied into ERP systems, cloud analytics and predictive maintenance platforms. “OT security is now the number one request we hear from manufacturers and utilities,” says a consultant at a German integrator. “Every project has to consider how industrial networks tie back into corporate IT.”
Predictive maintenance has become the flagship use case. The promise is simple: avoid downtime by predicting equipment failure before it happens. But the risks are equally clear. “We cannot blindly trust the black box,” warns an IT security architect from North Rhine-Westphalia. “Algorithms make mistakes — and in industrial environments, the cost of a wrong decision is massive.”
When it comes to vendors, Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks have built OT-specific portfolios, Cisco often acts as the backbone in segmented networks, and specialists like Claroty or Nozomi Networks are gaining traction with anomaly detection and visibility.
The integrators are just as critical. Axians runs a combined IT/OT Security Operations Center in Basel and positioned itself at Hannover Messe with the theme “To Connect OT.” Nicos Group focuses on secure networking and cyber defense, operating its own 24/7 SOC and expanding its reach after integrating with Xantaro. Controlware, one of Germany’s long-standing integrators, now offers explicit OT integration services, bridging production systems with enterprise IT.
Technology alone won’t close the gap. Cultural differences between IT security teams and plant managers remain a persistent hurdle. “For my people, every second of downtime means millions lost,” says a plant manager at a German automotive supplier. “Security is important, but production cannot wait.”
The duality is striking. Ransomware groups are already targeting industrial control systems, while enterprises are pushing harder than ever for automation, remote monitoring and AI-driven efficiency. More connectivity brings more exposure. Whether AI and self-healing networks will eventually reduce that risk is uncertain. What is certain is that the debate over how much automation and trust in algorithms is responsible in critical infrastructure has only just begun.
