Technology providers across Europe are no longer relying on organic growth alone. They are deliberately expanding their portfolios by acquiring highly specialised IT integrators. According to a recent IDC survey more than 60 percent of European IT service companies plan to strengthen their capabilities through targeted acquisitions in the next two years.
These deals are not about size for its own sake. They are about deep expertise in areas where the market’s demand is rising fastest. Industrial IT, embedded systems, IoT architectures and operational technology have become prime targets. Equally sought after are integrators with strong credentials in security fields such as SIEM solutions for security information and event management or in the automation of complex security workflows.
“Acquisitions give integrators instant access to markets that would take years to develop internally,” notes an industry analyst. “When you buy a team with proven industrial or SIEM capabilities, you can serve new customer segments on day one.”
Across the DACH region and far beyond, this playbook is becoming the norm. Specialist firms with unique domain know how are being folded into larger groups, allowing those groups to scale services faster and offer end to end solutions that stretch from industrial edge environments to advanced security operations.
The logic is simple but powerful. Customers are demanding comprehensive expertise and faster innovation cycles. By acquiring integrators with niche skills whether in operational technology, IoT or advanced security analytics—large service providers can close gaps in their portfolio and create competitive pressure that is difficult to match.
Of course such rapid consolidation carries its own challenges. Integrating distinct corporate cultures and aligning complex processes cannot be achieved overnight. Yet the companies that master these integrations gain an advantage that goes well beyond short term revenue.
As one CIO in the manufacturing sector puts it, “Specialist knowledge is becoming the new currency. Whoever can bring together these different disciplines under one roof will set the pace for the entire industry.”
The wave of portfolio expansion through acquisition has only just begun. It is transforming Europe’s IT integrators into providers with broader capabilities and greater resilience and it is likely to shape the continent’s technology services market for years to come.
