Why Most CVs in IT Infrastructure Do Not Reflect the Real Responsibility

 In our daily work at Darkgate and as a highly specialized recruitment partner within the IT infrastructure ecosystem, we repeatedly observe the same pattern in candidate profiles. Highly qualified system engineers, network engineers, security consultants, cloud architects, presales specialists, and technical leaders submit CVs that, at first glance, look solid and professional. But on closer inspection, something essential is missing: the real level of responsibility they carry in their day-to-day work.The issue is rarely a lack of competence. The issue is how that competence is presented.
[restrict paid=true]A typical CV in IT infrastructure often reads like a technical checklist. Company name, job title, dates, followed by a few bullet points mentioning technologies and general tasks. “Firewall implementation,” “network administration,” “customer support,” “project work.” For someone deeply familiar with the system integrator and vendor landscape, these descriptions are almost meaningless because they fail to answer the most important question: what role did this person actually play within the project, the customer environment, and the internal structure of the integrator?

A CTO of a mid-sized integrator once told us during a conversation: “When I read a CV, I want to understand where this person stood in the value chain. Were they processing tickets, or were they designing the architecture for the customer?” This distinction is critical, yet it is rarely visible in most CVs.

The core problem is that many candidates describe their work from a technical task perspective instead of a market and responsibility perspective. They list what they did, but not the context in which they did it. In IT infrastructure, context is everything. Were they involved in presales meetings? Did they run workshops at the customer site? Did they design architectures or simply deploy them? Were they part of escalations? Were they the technical contact for key accounts? These are the elements that define seniority and responsibility, yet they are often missing.A senior account manager at a large system integrator once summarized it perfectly: “I don’t recognize strong engineers by the technologies they list. I recognize them by whether they understand how projects are created at the customer.” This understanding is rarely visible in a CV, even though many engineers possess exactly this experience.

Another recurring issue is the absence of vendor visibility. In the world of system integrators, it makes a massive difference whether someone has worked extensively with Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, HPE Aruba, Extreme Networks, Microsoft Azure, VMware, or other key technology partners. These names are not just buzzwords; they position a candidate clearly within the market. When this experience is not highlighted properly, enormous value is lost. Decision makers can immediately contextualize a profile when they see: “five years of Fortinet deployments in enterprise environments” or “complex Azure tenant architectures across multiple customers.” Without this clarity, the CV remains generic.

What we also frequently observe is that candidates underestimate their own responsibility. Many describe their work modestly because, to them, they were “just doing their job.” In reality, they were responsible for customer architectures, technical concepts, project success, and often served as the bridge between sales, consulting, and delivery. This self-perception leads to CVs that significantly understate their true impact.

A consulting team leader from a large integrator once told us: “Eighty percent of our consultants write CVs like technicians, even though they are actually advisors.” This statement captures the essence of the problem. The role of IT infrastructure professionals has evolved dramatically over the past decade, but the way they present themselves has not.

Another critical aspect that is usually missing is project context. It makes a substantial difference whether someone worked on small projects for mid-sized companies or on highly complex, multi-vendor environments for large enterprise customers. This information is highly relevant for decision makers, yet CVs often reduce it to generic phrases like “customer projects in network and security environments.”

Equally important, but rarely mentioned, is the interaction with account management and presales. These interfaces are strong indicators of seniority and market understanding. Engineers and consultants who regularly participate in customer meetings with account managers, support presales concepts, or contribute to tenders carry a very different level of responsibility than someone who works purely on technical implementation. Yet, most CVs remain narrowly focused on technical tasks and ignore this broader dimension.

Interestingly, when we speak to candidates directly, they can describe their work in great detail. They talk about complex customer situations, architectural challenges, escalations, workshops, and responsibilities. All of this exists. It simply does not appear in the CV. The document becomes a simplified technical summary of what is, in reality, a highly complex, business-critical, and advisory role.

For us as recruiters, this means we constantly have to read between the lines, ask additional questions, and reconstruct the actual profile during interviews. For companies, however, this can mean that excellent candidates are overlooked because their CV does not communicate their true level of experience and responsibility.

In IT infrastructure, where projects are expensive, complex, and mission-critical, responsibility is a decisive factor. It is not just about configuring a firewall. It is about understanding how that firewall fits into the customer’s overall architecture, how it integrates into existing systems, and how the solution is communicated and justified to the customer. This ability is not purely technical. It is a combination of technology, consulting, communication, and market understanding. And this combination is exactly what most CVs fail to reflect.Ultimately, the problem is not qualification, but representation. Many highly capable IT infrastructure professionals significantly undersell themselves because they do not recognize how much responsibility they actually carry. Yet this responsibility is precisely what makes them so valuable for integrators and vendors.

A strong CV in IT infrastructure should not only show what technologies someone worked with. It should clearly illustrate where they stood in the value chain, what role they played at the customer, which vendor ecosystems they operated in, what scale of projects they handled, and how deeply they were involved in presales, consulting, and architecture. Only then does the CV begin to reflect the reality we hear about every single day in conversations with these professionals: roles that are advisory, highly responsible, business-critical, and far more complex than a simple list of technical tasks could ever suggest.[/restrict]
