The Most In Demand Profiles in IT System Houses 2026-2027

When speaking with Managing Directors, Chief Technology Officers, Heads of Presales, Service Leaders and technical decision makers inside IT system integrators, one thing becomes very clear very quickly. The demand for certain profiles has changed significantly over the past three to four years. What used to be considered a standard profile is now often less relevant. And what used to be seen as highly specialized knowledge has, in many cases, become a basic requirement. As the operators of Darkgate and a specialized recruiting agency with international activity, we have been observing this shift very closely for years. We are in daily contact with IT system integrators of all sizes, from mid sized regional system houses to international integrators generating several hundred million euros in revenue. Across all of them we see a consistent pattern that applies not only to Germany and Europe but globally. The nature of customer projects has changed, customer expectations have changed and as a result the profiles that are in demand today and will be in even higher demand in 2026 and 2027 have changed as well.

Four or five years ago, the classic IT system administrator was one of the most requested profiles. The generalist who could handle servers, networks, firewalls, clients and some virtualization. These profiles were extremely valuable because they covered a wide range of technologies. Today we clearly see that this generalist approach is losing importance. Not because these professionals are less capable, but because customer environments have become so complex that specialization has become more important than broad technical coverage.A major driver of this development was the wave of Microsoft 365 and cloud migration projects. Three to four years ago, Microsoft 365 consultants, Azure experts and cloud consultants were among the most requested profiles in almost every system house. Nearly every integrator built dedicated cloud teams. Migrating from on premises environments into the cloud was the central topic. But even here we now see a shift. Cloud knowledge alone is no longer enough. It has become the baseline. Today the focus is no longer only on migration but on integration, security, automation and intelligent use of these platforms.

This is where a new trend becomes visible, one that will become even more dominant in 2026 and 2027. The combination of cloud, security and artificial intelligence. Customers no longer only want to operate infrastructure. They want to analyze data, automate processes and detect security risks early. This creates new profile requirements inside system integrators.

One of the most requested profiles today is the Solution Architect with a strong focus on security, cloud integration and automation. These architects no longer think in terms of network design or server structures. They think in platform architectures that connect Microsoft environments, security vendors, network infrastructure and data analysis into one holistic solution. At the same time we see a massive increase in demand for Presales Consultants who are able to translate these complex topics into understandable concepts for customers. Solutions have become more complex and require much more explanation during the proposal phase. Presales has become more strategic and more important than it was only a few years ago.

Another highly requested profile is the Service Account Manager. As projects become more complex and managed services play a bigger role, system integrators need professionals who can take care of existing customers long term, develop service contracts and act as the interface between technology, service and customer. In the technical area we clearly observe a shift toward specialists in network security, cloud security, identity and access management and automation. Classic network engineers are requested less frequently, while network security engineers with strong vendor certifications and deep security understanding are in extremely high demand.

In addition, a relatively new profile is emerging that barely existed a few years ago. Consultants and architects focusing on integrating AI solutions into existing infrastructures. This role will gain even more importance in 2027. It is about connecting data sources, integrating AI tools into business processes and ensuring security and compliance while doing so.

Profiles that are less in demand today are the classic IT allrounders and roles that are purely operational without conceptual responsibility. Pure administrator roles are increasingly automated or shifted into managed service environments. What is in very high demand are profiles that combine technical depth with communication skills. Consultants, presales professionals and architects who understand customers, not only technology. People who do not only implement but also explain, advise and think strategically.

We observe this trend in smaller system houses as well as in large international integrators. Projects are becoming more consulting driven, more security critical and more strategic. As a result, the demand is shifting away from pure implementers toward concept driven specialists. As a recruiting partner with international reach, we see very clearly which profiles were highly demanded two years ago, which dominate today and which will become even more important next year. The intersection is obvious. Cloud, security, integration, communication and increasingly artificial intelligence.

Companies that are building these profiles today are strategically well prepared for the coming years. Companies that still think only in classic role definitions are increasingly under pressure. For candidates this represents a significant opportunity. Anyone who moves today toward security, cloud integration, presales or architecture will remain highly attractive in the market for years to come.

This is where we see our role as the operators of Darkgate and as a recruiting agency. We identify these developments early because we are in daily contact with decision makers. We do not see trends in theoretical studies. We see them directly in real project requirements. The demand inside IT system integrators is not changing randomly. It follows clear technological and economic developments. Those who understand these developments can make much more strategic decisions, both as companies and as professionals shaping their careers.
